FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions) …
Can I join?
Yes – we will continue to welcome all new players this year.
Are you still accepting new members?
Yes – this page is updated quite regularly. IF our membership reaches the point where we cannot accept new players, we will make sure that the website is correct and set up a waiting list.
Can I just turn up on Wednesday night?
Yes – on Wednesdays – you can usually just walk through to the courts (straight on through the double doors in the Pearson Centre reception area) and say hello. You don’t really need to send an email first to let us know you are coming because we have all 3 courts at this venue and plenty of space for new players at the moment.
Do I need to send an email before turning up?
If you want to play on a Wednesday, no. Just go down to the Pearson Centre and ask at Reception or walk through to the hall, organisers are usually Mark, Sarah and Damian. If you want to play on a Monday, see below.
What should I do if I want to play on Monday?
Please email email@example.com if you would like to play badminton on Monday evenings at Chilwell Olympia Leisure Centre. Both existing club members and new players are very welcome, but because there are several courts at the leisure centres we use, it’s better if we know to look out for new players and meet them. We typically have up to 10 players on Mondays and play in the main hall on the right hand side, but the actual court numbers we’re able to book vary from week to week.
Monday night badminton is organised by group text message (we have a WhatsApp Group) so please send me your mobile number if you’d like to be included (I don’t keep them, and once you’ve been added you can leave at any time. We can use a nickname rather than your real name for the purpose of the WhatsApp group as well.
If I am a beginner, does it matter?
No – everyone is welcome, but please contact us if you’ve never played badminton before so that we can try to ensure there will be other newcomers on the night you’ve chosen to attend. The best night to try if you are unsure of your playing ability would be Wednesday, where the standard is generally much more varied.
When do you play badminton?
See above schedule – or contact us and join our ‘mailing list’ (we send about 4-5 updates by email per month to our badminton players). The Monday night club has a group text message (WhatsApp group) and it’s updated several times per week so that players know exactly what is happening and when.
How much is it?
See below – between £3 and £7 per player per session. Most sessions are just ‘turn up and play’ but please read about our membership fee below.
Is there a joining or membership fee?
Yes. However, you don’t have to pay this straight away (see below).
Do I need my own badminton racket?
Yes – although if you can’t get hold of one let us know in advance because many of our members have spares they can probably bring along for you to borrow.
What about shuttle cocks, nets?
We provide the shuttles, the venues we hire provide the nets.
How will I know you / Where will I meet you?
At the Pearson Centre on Wednesdays, you can walk through the double doors and come through into the hall – we’re always welcoming new faces and will just say hello! Look out for Mark or Sarah in their distinctive blue club organiser T-shirts.
For badminton sessions at local leisure centres, please meet us in reception a few minutes earlier than the stated start time (and email us beforehand to let us know you’re coming so that we make sure there is someone waiting there for you).
Do you also play Singles Badminton?
Yes – whenever there is time / space available, some of our players will play each other at singles. However, most of the games we play are doubles or mixed doubles, so if you are looking for a particularly challenging, ‘super competitive’ or league style game of badminton, we can recommend other local clubs for you to try as well.
Annual Badminton Club Membership Fee and Costs Per Session
For Wednesday Evening Sessions, the cost per player is around £3.50 for members or £7.00 for non-members. When other badminton courts are booked – for example on Mondays at Chilwell Olympia – the cost of court hire (typically around £14 per hour) is shared between the players on the night (typically about £3 each).
We now have an optional annual membership fee of £17 per player, included in this price will be all of the club’s administration costs and a free Beeston.biz t-shirt. This amount is normally payable on your second visit to the club, but if you prefer not to join straight away you can continue to pay the non-members weekly contribution of £7 per player (this is heavily discounted for members, so after about a month you have effectively ‘paid for’ your membership). All players are now also asked to fill out a form with Emergency Contact Details, which will of course be kept confidential.
Welcome to Beeston.biz Badminton Club
We invite you to join in with friendly ’round robin’ style badminton games – usually on Monday or Wednesday evenings each week (exact court booking times may vary, other nights can be arranged if there is demand). We usually play badminton on 1, 2 or 3 courts, for up to 2 hours.
Whilst games are competitive (we manage to keep track of the score, almost always anyway!) the idea is to have a good laugh for an hour or two, and get fit at the same time.
Our badminton sessions are first and foremost sociable – on my first night I met and chatted with three or four different players all from different age groups and backgrounds whilst awaiting my next game on court. If you are a bit more of a serious player our Monday night sessions will suit you best. If you are looking for a very competitive badminton club / league to join, please contact us anyway because we may be able to provide you with some useful contact details. Chilwell Olympia is also a good place to make an enquiry, there are many ‘Badminton England’ affiliated clubs playing at this Leisure Centre (owned by Broxtowe Borough Council).
How To Join In And Play Badminton
Just turn up on a Wednesday at the Pearson Centre – or for further details please contact us – firstname.lastname@example.org – everyone is welcome, regardless of ability, sex or age group. Evening sessions are very popular at this time of year, so contact us now and join in before we have to introduce a waiting list!
Other Badminton Sessions
We also book courts at local leisure centres on other evenings, depending on the demand. Please make sure you’re on our contact list (we use both email and ‘Whats Ap’ text messaging) and let us know if you would like to play on other nights of the week at least 7 days in advance, because the council owned leisure facilities we use are in high demand and it is often difficult to find a court that is available. There are always lifts and car shares available if you need transport.
New Badminton Players: Always Welcome
Contact us now to say when you’re available, or just turn up on a Wednesday evening, we look forward to hearing from you or meeting you. We’re currently seeing many new players become regulars so you won’t be the only one! We usually play for 1 or 2 hours, sometime between 6.30pm and 10.30pm. The more interest we have the better, so that we can organise plenty of ‘on-court time’ for everyone.
Please contact us – email@example.com – for more details about our latest badminton court booking times and dates (and remember to tell us which evenings of the week you are likely to be available).
Social Events Calendar:
More Events Coming Soon…
We often meet outside of badminton socially – for example, we have a couple of pub quiz teams and have recently won the top prize at The Crown on a Thursday evening! Last month several players went to a concert, for a group meal at a local restaurant and a full day at ‘Go Ape’ was also organised for those who wanted to participate. Trips to Beer Festivals or for countryside walks using the excellent local transport (trams, trains and buses) happen as often as possible.
